1. What is Earthrise® Spirulina?
Spirulina is a microscopic, blue-green alga which naturally grows in alkaline (salty) lakes such as those in Africa. Spirulina is cultivated at the Earthrise Nutritionals farm in the Southern California desert. We copy the optimum conditions for Spirulina growth in nature to produce the world's best Spirulina. Spirulina is rich in phytonutrients and antioxidants, protein, vitamins and other nutrients. The health benefits of eating Spirulina are well documented in the biomedical literature. Earthrise Spirulina promotes immune system health and provides important antioxidant benefits.*
2. What is the difference between Earthrise® Spirulina Natural and Earthrise® Spirulina Organic?
Both our Spirulina Natural and our Spirulina Organic are herbicide and pesticide free. The difference in these two products can be found in the growing process. Our Spirulina Natural is grown on mineral fertilizers, just like wild Spirulina. Our Spirulina Organic is grown on fermented fertilizers and meets USDA Organic standards. The end result in nutrients is the same, however, the process in which it is grown is what makes one Organic and ne Natural.
3. Where does Earthrise get its Spirulina from?
Earthrise Nutritionals grows all of its own Spirulina on its farm, located in the sunny Southern California desert. Built in 1982, the Earthrise farm was the first Spirulina farm in the United States. Today, it is the world's largest Spirulina farm. All Earthrise Spirulina is grown without pesticides or herbicides. Earthrise Nutritionals produces Natural Spirulina and 100% Organic Spirulina; both are certified Kosher. Growing our own Spirulina assures that Earthrise Spirulina is of the best quality and purity. Our total commitment to quality makes Earthrise® Spirulina the #1 selling Spirulina in the world!
4. When do I take Spirulina?
Spirulina can be taken anytime. It may be best to take Spirulina with meals. If you are taking Spirulina for the first time, you may find it best to start with 2 tablets (or 1 gram of powder or 2 capsules) per day and gradually increase to 6 tablets (or 3 grams of powder or 5 capsules) per day over a period of 2 to 3 days. This is because, as with other new foods, your digestion may need a few days to adjust.
5. Can I take my Spirulina along with my other supplements?
Earthrise Spirulina is not known to interact adversely with other supplements. Spirulina is highly compatible with other supplements, especially probiotics like Lactobacillus or yogurt.
6. Are any other nutrients added to Earthrise Spirulina?
All of the nutrients listed on the label are natural to Spirulina. Nothing is added to Earthrise Spirulina Powder or Organic Spirulina Tablets. For the Natural Spirulina tablets, tiny amounts of natural micronized silica and vegetable stearate are used in the tableting process. Your body uses them as nutrients.
7. Can I give Spirulina to my children?
Yes, giving Spirulina to your children is a great idea! It's an easy way to fill in the gaps when they aren't eating all of the veggies that they should be eating. Spirulina tablets can be chewed or swallowed (if your child is able), and Spirulina powder can be added to yogurt, juice or applesauce.
Recommended Daily Serving Size for Children: Ages 2-5: Tablets are too big, give a pinch of 750mg or ¼ tsp Ages 6-9: 2-3 Tablets (1g-1.5g) Ages 10-15: 4-5 Tablets (2g-2.5g) Ages 15+: 6 Tablets (3g)
8. Is Spirulina yeast and gluten free?
Earthrise Spirulina is yeast free and gluten free.
9. Is heat used during the drying process?
Earthrise Spirulina is flash spray-dried. Even though heat is used, there is little or no effect on the nutrients in Spirulina due to evaporative cooling.
10. How do you keep the Spirulina ponds free of bacteria and other algae, given that they are open to the air?
The Spirulina culture grown by Earthrise is almost 100% pure because the growing medium is of such a high pH that very few other algae can survive in it. Earthrise also uses a proprietary culture control method to avoid contamination by other algae. As with other wholesome fruits and vegetables, the very low levels of natural bacteria that may be present are not harmful to human health. Earthrise Spirulina is free from harmful bacteria like E. coli, Staphylococcus and Salmonella.
11. How does Earthrise ensure that the quality of their product is consistent?
The Earthrise Laboratory conducts daily extensive analysis of quality and purity of living Spirulina and the finished products. Earthrise Nutritionals is an ISO 9001 (2000) registered and GMP Certified company. This means that its quality assurance system is audited by independent organizations to ensure compliance with national and international safety and quality standards.
